In the deepest shadows of the forest, she watches.

 This is Baba Yaga. The guardian of the old paths, dwelling in a house with chicken legs. Restless, wise, always moving. In some stories, she devours. In others, she delivers hard earned truth.

 This painting is both a memory and a reclamation.

I first painted her as a child, barefoot in my family’s home, enchanted by the strange magic of her moving house. Soviet cartoons made her funny, spooky, but somehow familiar. I always felt close to her, like we shared something.

Now, all grown, I paint her again. Larger than life. Not a villain, not a joke. A guardian of thresholds. A woman transformed.

 Some say her house is a grave. Others say it’s a temple.

All I know is: she was never just a witch.

She was a forest spirit. A feminine force. A mother of endings and beginnings.
